Telnet an obselescent tradition?
The Windows Vista Telnet FAQ was a good place to start. Having no further clue, the helpful prompt gave me a clue, the list of basic commands and syntax. So away we go, open a connection to Deakin Library then take a stab at the 2 choices for kind of terminal I am using - it’s 50/50, it’ll either work or break. Clear sailing from here and I’ve got the results in an email.

This is impressive. If I can do this within my own school library, I won’t have to worry about finding the phone number and bothering the staff during their business hours. I like how convenient and easy it is to use Telnet. When I came unstuck, there were clear instructions on screen and most tasks could be achieved with single keystrokes - it’s fast!
I tried to find the same title on Amazon. It took quite a bit longer and will require more than $20 to get my hands on a copy. A pretty picture, but who judges a book by the cover. The detail from the library’s Telnet output has much more details and further cross-referencing research options.
Is Telnet going out of fashion? Clearly not for me, but how does one find out about more Telnet servers?
Coming up next: FTP - sounds easy, I’ve been doing that for … about 13 years!

Ah, Telnet… that takes me back to when the internet was just green text on a black screen.
