tauhara mountain walking track

The start of the trail take you over the fence. If you’re anywhere near Taupo then you need to make the Mount Tauhara hike a priority. An information board is there to guide you, eg a suggested round trip of 3 to 3.5h. There is a space for you to climb down and dip your feet in if the desire takes you. In places on this track, there are cliffs and high drop-offs and thermal areas are changeable by nature, so stay behind barriers, keep to the track, and keep children safe. The sunset was happening about 8.30pm on the day I went and I was at the summit at about 5:30 pm which I think is a fine time to go if you want the photos of the green plateau you see in these photos. Besides the famous walking track, Tongariro, Tauhara is also a famous walking track of Taupo. The track is formed and relatively well maintained, but don’t expect to find trail markers along the way. The trail itself is only 2.5km long, the first few hundred metres over farmland until the bushline is reached. The descent is all downhill, and so can be a little hard on the knees.
